The American Chemical Society presented its 2026 Green Chemistry Challenge Awards during the Fall national meeting in Chicago, honoring technologies that advance safer, cleaner and more sustainable chemistry across multiple industries. This year’s recipients spanned recyclable polyurethanes, greener pharmaceutical synthesis, sustainable crop-protection actives, biodegradable polymers, PFAS-free semiconductor cooling solutions and biocide-free marine coatings. Collectively the awards underscore the continuing translation of green chemistry principles into commercially relevant products and processes.
The Green Chemistry Challenge Awards, given since 1996, evaluate innovations on their ability to reduce or eliminate hazardous substances, cut waste, improve energy or material efficiency, and deliver practical environmental benefits while remaining economically viable. Winners are drawn from academic, industrial and small-business settings, reflecting the breadth of the community working to redesign chemical products and manufacturing routes.
In the academic category, a Northwestern University–BASF collaboration was recognized for a solid-state platform that upcycles conventional polyurethane foams and elastomers into reprocessable materials through carbamate exchange, avoiding traditional depolymerization and harsh solvents. The approach addresses a long-standing circularity challenge for cross-linked thermoset polyurethanes widely used in furniture, automotive and construction applications.
Sustainable crop protection received recognition through Corteva Agriscience’s Adavelt™ fungicide, a naturally inspired active that controls more than 20 diseases across more than 30 crops while offering favorable environmental and toxicological profiles. The associated manufacturing route incorporates renewable feedstocks, fewer process steps and greener reagents, delivering both sustainability and cost-of-goods improvements.

Additional awards highlighted cleaner routes in pharmaceutical manufacturing, advances in biodegradable polymer systems, semiconductor-related cooling technologies free of intentional PFAS, and marine coatings that achieve performance without conventional biocides. Each winner demonstrated measurable reductions in hazard or waste alongside a clear path to real-world use.
For the specialty chemicals, materials and agrochemical marketplace, the 2026 awards provide a concise snapshot of where green chemistry is delivering practical results. Technologies that combine technical performance with lower environmental footprints continue to gain external validation, improving their visibility to customers, regulators and investors. The diversity of sectors represented—from plastics recycling to crop protection to electronics—illustrates that the design principles originally articulated in the green chemistry framework are now being applied across the industrial landscape.
By recognizing these 2026 innovations, the ACS again places publicly verifiable environmental improvement at the center of chemical achievement. The awards serve both as celebration of specific technical advances and as a continuing signal that safer, less wasteful chemistry is expected to remain a core criterion of industrial and academic success.
