US Ethylene-Based Product Exports Nearly Triple Between 2018 and 2025
US exports of ethylene-based products expanded dramatically between 2018 and 2025, rising from 690,000 metric tons worldwide in the first half of 2018 to 2.3 million tons in the first half of 2025, according to data cited by New Normal Consulting’s pH Report. The nearly threefold increase reflects the structural transformation of the US ethylene value chain following the shale-gas boom and the subsequent build-out of derivative capacity oriented toward export markets.
Abundant, cost-advantaged ethane feedstock enabled a wave of new steam-cracker and downstream investments along the US Gulf Coast. As domestic production of polyethylene and other ethylene derivatives outpaced internal demand growth, producers increasingly turned to overseas markets to maintain high operating rates. The result is a sustained rise in export volumes that has repositioned the United States as one of the world’s leading suppliers of ethylene-based materials.

From Domestic Balance to Export Platform
In the years preceding 2018, the US ethylene market was more finely balanced between production and domestic consumption. The subsequent capacity additions—both in ethylene itself and in derivative units—created a structural surplus that required external outlets. Export infrastructure, including bulk terminals and container capabilities, expanded in parallel, facilitating the movement of resins and other products to Latin America, Asia, Europe and other regions.
The growth has not been linear. Global demand cycles, logistics constraints, and competing supply from the Middle East and Asia have influenced annual volumes. Yet the overarching trajectory remains clearly upward. By the mid-2020s, exports accounted for a substantially larger share of US ethylene-derivative production than they did at the start of the period, altering both domestic pricing dynamics and global trade flows.
Implications for Global Chemical Trade
For the specialty and commodity chemicals marketplace, the tripling of US ethylene-based exports represents a durable shift in supply geography. Buyers in import-dependent regions have gained a major additional origin with a competitive cost position. Traditional exporters face greater competition in third markets, while logistics providers have adjusted networks to accommodate higher transatlantic and transpacific volumes of polyethylene and related products.
The data from 2018 to 2025 illustrate how feedstock advantage, when paired with sustained capacity investment, can rapidly elevate a region’s role in global chemical trade. US ethylene-based product exports have moved from a relatively modest outflow to a multi-million-ton annual flow, reshaping market balances and reinforcing the country’s status as a core supplier in the ethylene derivative chain.
