Life cycle assessment of polyethylene carrier bags manufactured from recycled plastics in Ghana: Environmental impacts of chemical additives and a fossil-intensive electricity grid
Author summary Plastic waste is a growing environmental challenge in many developing countries, including Ghana, where limited waste management systems and increasing plastic consumption have made recycling an important strategy for reducing pollution. However, recycling itself requires energy and materials that can also affect the environment. In this study, we evaluated the environmental impacts of producing polyethylene carrier bags from recycled plastic waste in Ghana using the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach. We found that electricity used during manufacturing is the largest source of environmental impacts in most categories, because Ghana's electricity supply relies heavily on fossil fuels. Sodium hydroxide, used in wastewater treatment, was the second-largest contributor to climate change impacts. Carbon black, an additive used in plastic production, was the second-largest contributor to fossil resource depletion. Chemicals used in wastewater treatment, particularly sodium hydroxide and polyaluminium chloride, also contributed substantially to toxicity-related impacts. We also examined the potential benefits of replacing the current electricity supply with solar energy and found that this change could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 74%, along with substantial reductions in most other environmental impacts. Our findings demonstrate that recycling plastic waste can be made significantly more sustainable through cleaner energy sources and improved selection of manufacturing additives. The study provides practical evidence to support policies and industrial strategies aimed at promoting a circular economy and reducing the environmental footprint of plastic recycling in Ghana and other sub-Saharan African countries.
