A Refillable Eye Implant Is Approved in the EU for Wet AMD
First Continuous Delivery Approval in the EU
The European Commission has approved Susvimo for wet AMD, providing continuous ranibizumab delivery through Roche's refillable Contivue ocular implant. By continuously delivering medicine into the eye through the Contivue refillable implant, Susvimo is the first and only continuous delivery treatment that offers an alternative to standard-of-care eye injections for nAMD.
Susvimo helps people with nAMD maintain their vision with as few as two treatments per year, Roche stated on September 21, 2026.
How the Contivue System Works
A central feature of the European approval is the combination of Susvimo with the Contivue refillable implant. The system is designed to provide continuous delivery of ranibizumab directly into the eye following a one-time outpatient surgical implantation procedure.
Medicines containing ranibizumab have been authorised in the EU for the treatment of nAMD since 2007: they are injected intravitreally into the vitreous humour, usually every four weeks. Susvimo is delivered via an ocular implant, the first of this kind approved in the EU, which is designed to release ranibizumab over time and is refilled every six months.
Clinical Data Behind Approval
Clinical data showed vision outcomes comparable with monthly intravitreal ranibizumab, while approximately 95% of patients receiving twice-yearly refills required no supplemental anti-VEGF treatment.
The European approval builds on the Ladder and Archway studies, plus the Portal long-term extension in the US where Susvimo was previously approved and then voluntarily recalled for manufacturing updates. The Contivue platform received a CE mark in 2025 and includes the refillable eye implant together with ancillary devices used to fill, insert, refill and, if necessary, remove the implant.
Why Treatment Burden Matters in Wet AMD
nAMD is a leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 60 and affects 1.7 million in the European Union. Standard care requires frequent eye injections, clinic visits and caregiver support, leading to under-treatment in real world practice.
Roche's Susvimo uses the refillable Contivue eye implant to continuously deliver ranibizumab and reduce treatment frequency for wet age-related macular degeneration. Why is Susvimo not simply a more convenient version? The convenience advantage comes with an important trade-off: the implant requires surgery.

Surgical Implantation and Refill Process
Contivue is inserted into the eye during a one-time outpatient procedure, after which the device remains in place and is refilled rather than replaced at each treatment interval. European health regulators have cleared the implant for neovascular AMD, offering patients an alternative to frequent monthly injections.
A corporate statement from Zurich explains that this continuous-delivery device utilizes a refillable container known as the Contivue implant to dispense drugs straight into the eye across extended timeframes, thereby cutting necessary procedures down to a mere two per year.
Competitive Landscape and Next Battleground
Roche wins EU approval for Susvimo as wet AMD treatment burden becomes the next battleground. Vabysmo (faricimab), the first bispecific antibody for the eye targeting VEGF and Ang-2, already offers up to 16-week intervals, while biosimilar ranibizumab and aflibercept pressure costs.
Susvimo's differentiator is continuous delivery versus bolus injections. Ranibizumab (Susvimo), developed by Genentech, is a refillable, implantable ocular drug delivery system designed to continuously release a customized formulation of ranibizumab, a VEGF inhibitor, over an extended period.
Availability and Implications for EU Patients
CHMP recommended EU approval of Roche's Susvimo, the first continuous delivery treatment for neovascular AMD, on July 24, 2026, leading to European Commission approval in September. Commercial launch across EU27 is expected in Q4 2026 with training for retinal surgeons on insertion and refill technique.
For patients who cannot maintain monthly visits, the implant offers vision maintenance with as few as two treatments per year, potentially reducing progression to blindness and caregiver burden across Europe's aging population.
