A Danish e-SAF Project Secures a 10-Year-Plus Buyer
A major commercial milestone has arrived for one of Europe’s leading power-to-liquid sustainable aviation fuel projects. German energy company Uniper has agreed to purchase 40,000 metric tonnes of e-SAF annually for more than ten years from Arcadia eFuels’ Project Endor in Vordingborg, Denmark. The legally binding offtake, announced in September 2026, ranks among the largest announced e-SAF purchase agreements to date and is intended to underpin final investment decision and construction of the Danish plant. First deliveries are planned from the early 2030s, subject to conditions precedent and commercial start-up of the facility.
Project Endor at a Glance
Project Endor is being developed at the Port of Vordingborg on Masnedø. The plant is designed to produce roughly 80,000 tonnes per year of e-fuels, including e-SAF, using renewable electricity, on-site green hydrogen from electrolysis (around 240–280 MW) and captured biogenic CO₂. Arcadia describes the resulting fuel as capable of cutting lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions by up to 98% compared with conventional jet fuel and as compatible with EU sustainable aviation fuel rules, including the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation.
Why the Uniper Deal Matters
Long-term offtake is the critical missing piece for many early e-SAF projects. Banks and equity investors typically require firm demand before committing capital to large-scale power-to-liquid plants. By locking in half of Endor’s planned output for more than a decade, Uniper provides Arcadia with the demand certainty needed to advance financing and construction. For Uniper, the contract secures a future supply of RFNBO-compliant (renewable fuel of non-biological origin) aviation fuel in a market that EU policy is designed to expand rapidly from 2030 onward.
Policy Backdrop
From 2030 the EU introduces a sub-mandate for e-SAF starting at 1.2% and potentially rising toward 35% by 2050 under ReFuelEU Aviation. Airlines and fuel suppliers face growing obligations to blend synthetic fuels. Securing volumes years ahead of the mandate gives Uniper a strategic position in a market expected to tighten as obligations increase and new production capacity remains limited.

Path to Production
Arcadia completed front-end engineering design earlier and secured an EU Innovation Fund grant agreement in 2026 covering capital and operating support. Environmental permitting and electrical infrastructure agreements have also advanced. The company is targeting final investment decision around the first quarter of 2027, followed by financial close and construction, with commercial operations and Uniper deliveries expected in the early 2030s—later than some earlier project timelines that had aimed for the mid-2020s.
Scale in Context
The contracted 40,000 tonnes per year is equivalent, according to the companies, to the fuel required for roughly 1,000 annual Boeing 787-9 flights between Düsseldorf and Abu Dhabi. While still modest relative to total European jet-fuel demand, it represents one of the largest single e-SAF volume commitments announced so far and a tangible step toward building a European synthetic-fuel supply chain.
Outlook
Uniper’s decade-plus offtake from Project Endor demonstrates that large energy players are prepared to underwrite long-term demand for European e-SAF. For Arcadia, the deal reduces financing risk and accelerates the path to FID. For the broader market, it offers a reference point for how binding offtake, public funding and project development can be sequenced to bring power-to-liquid capacity online. Delivery on the early-2030s timeline, and the ability of subsequent projects to secure similar contracts, will determine how quickly e-SAF moves from policy ambition to material volumes in European aviation fuel tanks.
