Alfa Laval to Fully Integrate Desmet, Expanding Its Oils, Fats and Biofuel Engineering Reach
Alfa Laval is moving to fully integrate Desmet by July 2027, bringing Desmet’s upstream oilseed extraction and processing expertise together with Alfa Laval’s capabilities in separation, heat transfer, and downstream processing. The two businesses have operated separately since Alfa Laval acquired Desmet in 2022.
The integration is strategically important for the global oils, fats and biofuel industries because it creates a broader end-to-end engineering offering, covering processes from raw-material extraction through final product processing. Alfa Laval says the combined organization will extend its global sales, service and supply network with local teams in more than 150 countries.
From Oilseed Processing to Biofuels
Desmet brings more than 80 years of experience in oils, fats, proteins, feed and biofuel process technologies, while Alfa Laval contributes expertise in separation, heat transfer and fluid handling. Their combined capabilities can support producers seeking greater process integration, plant efficiency and operational reliability.
The development also comes as producers continue investing in renewable fuels. Alfa Laval currently provides technologies for biodiesel, HVO, SAF and other biofuel processes, including heat exchangers, separators, evaporators and pretreatment systems.
Desmet's HVO/SAF pretreatment technology can process diverse feedstocks such as vegetable oils, animal fats and used cooking oil, with pretreatment designed to remove contaminants including phosphorus and metals before downstream hydroprocessing.
Why the Integration Matters for Commodity Chemical Markets
Although the transaction is primarily an engineering and process-technology development, it has implications for commodity chemical and industrial supply chains.
More integrated processing solutions can help oilseed, oleochemical and biofuel producers improve feedstock utilization, separation efficiency, energy management and process reliability. For chemical suppliers, this can translate into evolving requirements for processing aids, treatment chemicals, filtration materials and other inputs used throughout oils, fats and renewable-fuel production.

The trend is particularly relevant to the expanding HVO and SAF value chain. In July 2026, Alfa Laval announced its selection for a major Brazilian SAF project involving soybean oil, tallow, used cooking oil and macaúba as feedstocks, with a planned production capacity of 1 billion litres of SAF per year once operational.
What Buyers and Suppliers Should Watch
The Alfa Laval–Desmet integration highlights several areas worth monitoring:
Greater process integration: Customers can potentially source more engineering capabilities from a single global partner.
Biofuel investment: HVO, biodiesel and SAF projects continue creating demand for specialized processing technologies.
Feedstock flexibility: Producers are increasingly working with vegetable oils, animal fats, waste oils and other alternative feedstocks.
Process efficiency: Energy consumption, yield, impurity removal and plant uptime remain important competitive factors.
After-sales services: The combined organization plans to strengthen service capabilities alongside equipment and engineering.
Global project execution: The expanded network could support projects across established and emerging biofuel markets.
The planned integration, targeted for completion by July 2027, reflects a broader industrial trend toward combining specialized process technologies into more comprehensive production solutions. For oils, fats and renewable fuels, the ability to handle increasingly diverse feedstocks while improving efficiency and product quality will remain an important competitive factor.
For commodity-chemical suppliers, the development is worth tracking because expansion of oil processing, HVO and SAF infrastructure can influence downstream demand for chemicals and materials used in pretreatment, purification, separation and industrial processing.
