Braskem's Biobased Ethylene Export Logistics Continue Through Ownership Change

Braskem's bio-based ethylene operation in Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, remains a strategically important part of the company's sustainable chemicals portfolio as ownership shifts to IG4 Capital. The facility produces ethylene from sugarcane-based ethanol and supplies the feedstock used to manufacture Braskem's I'm green™ bio-based polyethylene. Braskem increased the unit's capacity to 275,000 tonnes per year, reinforcing Triunfo's role in serving international demand for renewable polymers.

A Supply Chain Built Around Brazilian Feedstock

The logistics chain starts with sugarcane grown in Brazil, which is processed into ethanol before being delivered to Braskem's Triunfo facility. The ethanol is converted into bio-based ethylene and then transported through pipelines to Braskem's PE4 and PE5 polymerization units, also located in Triunfo. This integrated structure reduces the number of external transfers between ethylene production and polymerization, providing operational continuity for the bio-based product chain.

Global Distribution Remains the Commercial Focus

Although production is concentrated in southern Brazil, the resulting bio-based polyethylene is intended for customers across global markets. Braskem established its I'm green™ portfolio as a commercially scalable renewable alternative to conventional fossil-based polyethylene, and the company has continued expanding production to meet international demand. The Triunfo facility was originally designed to produce 200,000 tonnes annually, with successive expansions increasing its capacity substantially.

Ownership Change Does Not Automatically Disrupt Operations

The IG4 Capital transition changes Braskem's ownership and strategic governance, but the company's current financial restructuring has been described as focused on its financial obligations rather than ordinary operations. Braskem has specifically indicated that its restructuring process does not affect obligations to suppliers and customers, reducing the immediate risk of disruption to established commercial relationships.

Its Trading & Shipping unit has expanded the company's control over maritime transportation and raw-material logistics, including its own vessels operating on international routes. This greater logistics autonomy is intended to reduce transportation costs and strengthen competitiveness, which could become increasingly important as the company works through its financial restructuring and seeks to protect higher-value sustainable product businesses.
