Global methanol markets remain under pressure as disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz continue to restrict traditional supply routes from the Middle East.
The disruption is particularly important because the Middle East represents a major source of internationally traded methanol. S&P Global estimated that approximately 18% of global methanol capacity was affected by the disruption following the outbreak of the Middle East conflict.
Although alternative supply routes and regional inventories have helped prevent a complete breakdown in global availability, trade flows remain significantly different from their pre-crisis patterns.
For chemical buyers, the result is a market where availability, freight, regional arbitrage and replacement costs are becoming just as important as headline methanol prices.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime corridor connecting major Middle Eastern producers with international customers.
Iran is particularly important to the methanol market. The country accounts for roughly 11% of global methanol nameplate capacity and exports more than 90% of its production, with China and India among its major destinations.
When shipping through Hormuz becomes restricted, the impact therefore extends beyond the Middle East.
Cargoes that would normally move toward Asia and other destinations become unavailable, delayed or redirected. Buyers then have to compete for alternative material from suppliers in China, Southeast Asia, North America and other regions.
The initial disruption produced a sharp reaction across global methanol markets.
S&P Global reported that Southeast Asian methanol prices reached record highs, while European prices increased approximately 47% after the conflict began. US prices also increased, although by a smaller 18%, as additional spot liquidity became available.
The scale of the price response illustrates how closely methanol pricing is linked to physical trade flows.
Even markets that do not depend heavily on Middle Eastern imports can experience price increases when global buyers compete for replacement cargoes.
China is the world's largest methanol producer, but it also relies heavily on imports.
Iran has traditionally been an important supplier of imported methanol to China. Prolonged disruption to Hormuz therefore creates a double challenge: fewer Middle Eastern cargoes are available while Chinese downstream industries still require methanol.
Analysts warned early in the crisis that a prolonged Hormuz disruption could significantly affect China's methanol imports.
However, China's large domestic production base provides an important buffer.
This means the impact is not simply a question of whether China has enough methanol. Instead, the market must balance domestic production, imports, inventory levels, downstream operating rates and regional price differences.
With traditional Middle Eastern cargoes constrained, methanol buyers have increasingly had to look for alternative origins.

This creates a chain reaction.
When Asian buyers increase purchases from alternative origins, availability for other regions can tighten. At the same time, longer shipping distances can increase freight costs and extend delivery times.
Consequently, a disruption in one maritime corridor can create pricing effects thousands of kilometers away.
Europe provides an important example of trade-flow adjustment.
Despite significant price increases, European methanol supply was supported during Q2 by imports from the United States while Middle Eastern exports through Hormuz were blocked.
This demonstrates the importance of having flexible global trade networks.
US-origin cargoes can partially replace Middle Eastern material when price spreads and freight economics make the trade viable.
However, substitution has limits.
Available cargoes, vessel capacity, freight rates and regional demand all determine how much replacement supply can actually reach a particular market.
One of the most important lessons from the current methanol market is that alternative supply does not automatically eliminate tightness.
A buyer may technically be able to source methanol from another region, but the replacement cargo could involve:
Higher freight costs
Longer transit times
Higher insurance premiums
Different payment terms
Limited availability
Higher minimum order quantities
Additional regulatory requirements
The physical material may therefore remain available while the cost and complexity of obtaining it increase significantly.
Methanol is used across a wide range of industrial applications.
Key downstream markets include:
Formaldehyde
Acetic acid
Methanol-to-olefins
MTBE
Solvents
Fuels
Other chemical intermediates
The strength of these downstream markets determines how aggressively buyers compete for available cargoes.
S&P Global reported that the market entered 2026 with relatively ample supply and subdued demand, but the Hormuz disruption rapidly changed the balance by restricting physical availability.
This creates an unusual situation where supply constraints can coexist with weak demand in individual downstream sectors.
China's methanol-to-olefins sector is particularly important because it represents a major source of methanol demand.
However, high methanol prices can undermine MTO economics.
When methanol becomes too expensive relative to the value of downstream olefins, operators may reduce operating rates or temporarily shut units.
This creates a balancing mechanism:
Higher methanol prices → weaker MTO margins → lower methanol consumption
The resulting demand reduction can partially offset supply shortages.
This helps explain why methanol prices can remain volatile even when physical supply is constrained.
The ongoing disruption has several important implications for chemical procurement teams.
A methanol quotation should always be evaluated alongside its origin.
Middle Eastern, US, Chinese and Southeast Asian cargoes can have very different freight and availability profiles.
Historical contract prices may no longer reflect the actual cost of securing replacement cargoes.
Procurement teams should compare current offers against regional spot prices and freight-adjusted alternatives.
Companies heavily dependent on a single producing region are more exposed to geopolitical disruption.
Maintaining qualified suppliers across several regions can provide greater flexibility.
In a tight market, very lean inventories can expose buyers to spot-market volatility.
Companies with predictable methanol consumption may need to reassess safety-stock levels while supply uncertainty remains elevated.
A lower methanol price can be misleading if the associated freight cost has increased substantially.
The relevant metric is:
Methanol price + freight + insurance + duties + inland logistics
This provides a more accurate view of procurement economics.
Even if shipping through the Strait of Hormuz improves, trade flows may not immediately return to their previous structure.
The disruption has already encouraged buyers to establish alternative suppliers, redirect cargoes and reassess inventory strategies.
Energy-market analysts have similarly warned that restoring global trade and inventories to pre-conflict conditions can take time even after physical flows begin recovering.
For methanol buyers, this means that a reopening of the route should not automatically be interpreted as an immediate return to normal pricing.
The changing trade structure can also create opportunities.
When regional methanol prices diverge significantly, traders and procurement teams can evaluate whether alternative-origin cargoes become economically attractive after freight and other costs.

may become more competitive when Middle Eastern supply is restricted.
The key is to evaluate the full delivered economics rather than comparing regional prices alone.
The methanol market is likely to remain sensitive to developments around Hormuz and the broader Middle East.

Reuters reported in early August that markets were still watching negotiations and possible mechanisms for reopening the waterway, while shipping and regional security risks remained unresolved.
Methanol trade flows remain tight because the Hormuz disruption has removed or constrained a significant portion of the supply that traditionally moves through the Middle East.
The impact has extended well beyond the producing region, affecting Asian imports, European replacement supply, freight economics and global methanol pricing.
For procurement teams, the current environment reinforces a critical lesson: methanol sourcing risk is not determined by price alone.
Origin, freight, inventory, alternative suppliers and geopolitical exposure all need to be considered when evaluating procurement decisions.
As the market moves through the second half of 2026, companies that closely monitor trade flows and regional price spreads will be better positioned to identify alternative supply, manage landed costs and respond quickly if Hormuz-related constraints persist.
