South Korea: Chugai Establishes a Wholly Owned Subsidiary, Chugai Pharma Korea
Chugai to Establish Chugai Pharma Korea
Japanese pharmaceutical company Chugai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. has decided to establish a wholly owned subsidiary in South Korea as it prepares for future product launches in the country's growing pharmaceutical market.
The new company, Chugai Pharma Korea Co., Ltd., is scheduled to be incorporated on November 2, 2026. Chugai said the subsidiary will become its core local base for obtaining marketing authorization, importing pharmaceutical products, and eventually conducting in-house sales in South Korea.
Building an In-House Presence in South Korea
South Korea is already within Chugai's development and sales territory under its strategic alliance with Roche. Historically, Chugai primarily entered the Korean market through licensing arrangements with local partners.
The company said its proprietary pipeline has now strengthened significantly, including assets such as sparsentan and NXT007, as well as next-generation macrocyclic peptide medicines in development.
Against this backdrop, Chugai plans to establish its own integrated capabilities in South Korea, covering regulatory approval, supply, and sales.

Chugai Pharma Korea Company Details
The planned subsidiary will be fully owned by Chugai Pharmaceutical.
Key details include:
Company: Chugai Pharma Korea Co., Ltd.
Planned incorporation: November 2, 2026
Location: Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea
Representative Director: Masaya Seki
Capital: KRW 3 billion
Ownership: 100% Chugai Pharmaceutical
Business activities: Obtaining marketing authorization, importing and selling pharmaceutical products, and related operations.
Phased Expansion of Operations
Chugai does not plan to establish the subsidiary's complete commercial structure immediately. Instead, the company intends to expand its functions and workforce in phases.
The first stage will focus on building capabilities to submit applications and obtain marketing authorization for pharmaceutical products. The company then plans to develop an in-house sales organization in preparation for future product launches.
This approach will allow Chugai to build its Korean operations alongside the development and regulatory progress of its pipeline.
Focus on Chugai's Proprietary Pipeline
The decision is closely connected to the expansion of Chugai's proprietary drug pipeline.
Sparsentan, NXT007, and future macrocyclic peptide medicines are among the assets Chugai highlighted when explaining the rationale for strengthening its presence in South Korea.
The company expects a direct local structure to provide greater control over the regulatory and commercial processes associated with these products.
South Korea as a Growth Market
Chugai described South Korea as a growth market supported by factors including rapid population aging and government policies aimed at improving access to innovative medicines.
The establishment of a dedicated subsidiary gives Chugai a local platform from which to develop its regulatory, supply, and commercial capabilities.
The move also represents a shift from the company's previous reliance on local out-licensing arrangements toward a more integrated operating model for its own products.
Supporting Future Product Launches
Once established, Chugai Pharma Korea will provide the foundation for Chugai's future pharmaceutical activities in South Korea.
The company plans to progressively strengthen its local organization ahead of new product launches. This includes developing the capabilities needed to secure marketing approvals and subsequently establish commercial operations.
The establishment of the subsidiary therefore represents an organizational step rather than the immediate launch of a specific medicine.
Outlook for Chugai in South Korea
Chugai's planned Korean subsidiary is expected to become an important local base for the company's future operations in the market.
With the company planning to manage activities ranging from regulatory approval to supply and sales, Chugai Pharma Korea will support the commercialization of Chugai's pipeline as products progress toward potential launches.
The subsidiary is scheduled for incorporation on November 2, 2026, after which Chugai plans to expand its functions and workforce in phases.
