Volkswagen Is Redesigning Car Parts Around What LG Chem Can Recycle
Volkswagen Group and South Korea’s LG Chem have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop next-generation eco-friendly mobility materials, with a clear focus on lightweight plastics and greater use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content in vehicle components. The partnership centres on LG Chem’s acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and engineering plastics, materials already widely used in automotive interiors and exteriors. Beyond simply supplying existing grades, the collaboration aims to align part design and material selection with what can be effectively recycled and re-incorporated at scale—effectively letting recyclability and recycled-content performance influence how components are specified and engineered.
Scope of the Collaboration
Under the MOU, the two companies will work on plastics and composite materials intended to reduce vehicle weight while meeting performance requirements for interior and exterior parts. LG Chem will also explore expanded application of its PCR portfolio and cost-efficient material solutions across Volkswagen’s major brands. Target components include items such as side mirrors and radiator grilles, where high-gloss, high-heat-resistant and paintless grades can deliver both aesthetic and functional benefits.
Why Design for What Can Be Recycled Matters
Automotive circularity goals are increasingly constrained by the gap between theoretical recyclability and the materials that can actually be recovered, sorted and reprocessed into high-quality grades suitable for visible or structural parts. By bringing a major materials supplier into early collaboration, Volkswagen gains insight into which polymer formulations, colour strategies and part architectures are most compatible with LG Chem’s PCR capabilities. Designing parts around those realities—rather than treating recycled content as a late-stage substitution—raises the odds that recycled plastics will meet durability, appearance and processing requirements at commercial volumes.

LG Chem’s Materials Platform
LG Chem operates a global ABS capacity of approximately 2.35 million metric tons per year and was the first company in the industry to commercialise white-coloured PCR ABS. Its portfolio includes high-gloss, high-heat-resistant and paintless grades that can be applied directly to customer-specific parts. These attributes are particularly relevant for exterior components where paint elimination or high thermal stability can simplify manufacturing and reduce cost while supporting lightweighting.
Strategic Fit for Volkswagen
European and global regulations are pushing higher recycled-content targets and lower vehicle CO₂ footprints. Lightweighting remains a core lever for efficiency in both combustion and electric vehicles, while interior and exterior plastics represent a large share of non-metallic mass. Partnering with a supplier that already scales PCR materials allows Volkswagen to accelerate qualification of recycled grades and to influence future material development so that new parts are born compatible with circular supply chains.
Practical Implications for the Supply Chain
If the collaboration progresses from MOU to series applications, tier suppliers and moulders working with Volkswagen brands will increasingly encounter specifications that reference PCR content and design guidelines optimised for recyclability. Material data, colour consistency, long-term ageing performance and processing windows for PCR grades will become routine engineering inputs. Success will depend on consistent PCR feedstock quality, competitive cost, and the ability to meet stringent automotive validation standards without compromising safety or perceived quality.
Outlook
The LG Chem–Volkswagen agreement signals a shift from simply buying recycled plastics to co-developing materials and part concepts around what can be reliably recycled and re-used. By aligning design decisions with a major producer’s PCR capabilities, Volkswagen is positioning its future interior and exterior components for higher circular content and lower weight. The real test will be how quickly those jointly developed solutions move from pilot parts into high-volume platforms—and whether the resulting components deliver the performance, aesthetics and cost that modern vehicle programs demand.
