Centalion Buys a Haynesville Gas Portfolio From Silver Hill
Centalion Expands Its US Natural Gas Portfolio
Centalion Group has acquired a portfolio of upstream and midstream natural gas assets from Silver Hill Energy Partners, expanding its presence in the Haynesville region of Texas and Louisiana.
Announced on October 5, 2026, the transaction includes producing natural gas wells, undeveloped acreage, and supporting midstream infrastructure. It strengthens Centalion’s position in one of the United States’ important natural gas-producing regions and advances its strategy of linking physical gas production with marketing, trading, and LNG export opportunities.
Centalion, formerly known as Gunvor Group, is an international energy trading company that has increasingly invested in US natural gas assets. The acquisition builds on its earlier investments in the Haynesville basin and its partnership with Western Natural Resources, which will operate the acquired assets.
The transaction was valued at approximately $1.5 billion, including debt, according to reporting by The Wall Street Journal. Centalion did not disclose the financial terms in its official announcement.
Key Details of the Haynesville Acquisition
The acquired portfolio combines current production with a substantial inventory of future development opportunities.
Key asset details include:
Approximately 72,000 net acres across the core Haynesville and Bossier development areas.
Around 300 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of current net natural gas production.
Approximately 300 gross operated development locations, providing opportunities for future drilling.
Upstream and midstream assets, including gas-gathering and related infrastructure.
Silver Hill built much of the portfolio through acquisitions between late 2021 and mid-2023. During its ownership, the company expanded production from less than 100 MMcf/d to more than 300 MMcf/d while retaining hundreds of additional drilling opportunities.
The combination of producing wells, undeveloped acreage, and infrastructure gives Centalion both immediate exposure to natural gas sales and opportunities to increase output over time.
Why the Haynesville Basin Matters
The Haynesville shale is a major natural gas-producing formation spanning parts of eastern Texas and northern Louisiana. It is particularly attractive because of its proximity to the industrial and energy markets along the US Gulf Coast.
The region's location provides access to pipelines, gas processing facilities, power generators, industrial consumers, and LNG export terminals. This connectivity can create opportunities for producers and traders to supply gas to several different markets.
The adjacent Bossier development area also contributes to the portfolio's resource base and drilling potential.
For Centalion, acquiring assets in these areas provides direct exposure to US natural gas production rather than relying exclusively on purchasing gas from third-party producers. This can improve its ability to coordinate production, transportation, marketing, and sales.
However, the commercial value of the portfolio will depend on future gas prices, production costs, infrastructure capacity, and the pace at which new wells are developed.
Centalion Targets Higher Production
Centalion intends to expand its Haynesville position through an active development program alongside Western Natural Resources.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the company aims to increase production from its Haynesville assets to more than 700 MMcf/d over the coming years. Achieving that target would require continued drilling, investment, and efficient development of the acquired acreage and other assets in its regional portfolio.
The approximately 300 development locations included in the Silver Hill transaction provide a significant inventory of potential drilling sites. Their actual contribution to production will depend on well performance, investment decisions, and development schedules.
Western Natural Resources will manage the acquired operations on Centalion’s behalf. The partnership is intended to combine operational expertise with Centalion’s trading and marketing capabilities.
Connecting Gas Production With LNG Export Markets
One of the acquisition's main strategic attractions is the opportunity to connect upstream production with the Gulf Coast's extensive energy infrastructure.
Natural gas produced in the Haynesville can be transported through pipeline networks to domestic markets or to LNG terminals, where it is cooled into liquid form for shipment overseas.
LNG exports create access to international buyers, including customers in Europe and Asia. They can also increase the commercial importance of production regions located near export infrastructure.
Centalion already operates a significant US LNG trading business. By owning additional gas-producing assets, the company can coordinate its physical supply with its existing trading activities and evaluate opportunities across domestic and international markets.
The acquisition does not guarantee higher LNG exports, because volumes ultimately depend on pipeline availability, terminal capacity, contractual commitments, and market conditions. Nevertheless, it gives Centalion a broader asset base from which to pursue those opportunities.
Silver Hill Refocuses on Its Remaining Assets
The sale marks a major portfolio change for Silver Hill Energy Partners, a private energy company founded in 2011.
Following the transaction, Silver Hill's operated portfolio is concentrated in the Bakken region of North Dakota and the Eagle Ford region of Texas. The company reported that its remaining assets include approximately 115,000 operated net acres, around 1,000 gross drilling locations, and production of approximately 22,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, alongside two midstream businesses.
Selling the Haynesville portfolio allows Silver Hill to realize value from assets it developed and expanded over several years while retaining exposure to other US oil and gas regions.
For Centalion, the purchase represents an opportunity to acquire an established production platform with existing infrastructure rather than building an equivalent portfolio entirely through new drilling and development.
Centalion’s Broader Energy Investment Strategy
The deal reflects a wider shift in Centalion’s strategy toward combining energy trading with investments in physical assets.
The company recently changed its name from Gunvor Group to Centalion Group and announced plans to relocate its corporate headquarters from Cyprus to Singapore.
Its investment approach increasingly focuses on selected energy markets where ownership of production, infrastructure, or other assets can complement its trading activities. Gulf Coast natural gas is one of its stated strategic priorities.
The Haynesville acquisition supports this approach by adding producing resources and future drilling opportunities to a business that already has access to gas transportation and LNG markets.
This integrated model can provide additional commercial flexibility, but it also exposes the company to the operating risks, capital requirements, and price fluctuations associated with owning natural gas assets.
What the Acquisition Means for the US Gas Market
Centalion's purchase highlights continued investor interest in US natural gas production, particularly in regions with strong pipeline connections and access to LNG export infrastructure.
The Haynesville portfolio offers three main advantages: existing production, a substantial inventory of undeveloped locations, and infrastructure that can support the movement of gas toward customers.
For Centalion, these assets can strengthen the connection between physical production and energy trading. For the wider market, continued development in the basin could contribute to future gas supplies for power generation, industry, and export demand.
The acquisition is not itself a guarantee of increased production or lower natural gas prices. Those outcomes will depend on future investment, drilling performance, demand growth, and the economics of bringing additional wells online.
Nevertheless, the transaction positions Centalion to play a larger role in the US natural gas supply chain as it expands its presence in the Haynesville and Bossier areas.
