EnviTec Biogas Accelerates Shift From Electricity to Biomethane in H1 2026
EnviTec Biogas is accelerating its transition from electricity generation toward biomethane production after reporting higher revenue and overall output for the first half of 2026. Revenue reached €169.2 million, compared with €148.4 million in H1 2025, while total output including plants under construction increased to €182.9 million from €164.9 million.
The stronger top-line performance came alongside weaker earnings. EBITDA declined to €21.4 million from €26.3 million, while earnings before tax fell to €4.4 million from €10.2 million. EnviTec attributed the pressure mainly to higher costs associated with marketing Bio-LNG and the retroactive removal of double counting for advanced biofuels under Germany's greenhouse-gas quota framework.
The company is responding by increasing its focus on biomethane. A successful German biomass auction secured around 16 MW of electrical capacity, while EnviTec plans around €100 million of investment through 2029 for new construction, modernization and conversion of additional plants toward Bio-LNG production.
Biomethane Becomes a Larger Part of EnviTec's Strategy
EnviTec's latest results show a strategic shift in the company's own-operations business. The company operates 91 of its own biogas plants and is using its existing asset base as a platform for developing biomethane and Bio-LNG production.
The transition is designed to move part of the portfolio away from relying primarily on electricity generation. Biomethane can instead be upgraded from biogas and supplied into gas markets, creating opportunities across transportation, heating and other energy applications.
EnviTec sees additional potential in Germany's heating market following the country's building modernization legislation, while the company is also calling for clearer rules around a future green-gas quota and gas-grid connections.
For energy and chemical market participants, this shift is relevant because it expands the role of biogas infrastructure beyond electricity generation. It also increases demand for technologies used in gas upgrading, compression, liquefaction, storage and distribution.
H1 2026 Revenue Rose Despite Lower Earnings
EnviTec's first-half financial performance presents a mixed picture. Revenue increased by approximately 14% year on year to €169.2 million, while total output rose by approximately 11% to €182.9 million.
However, profitability declined across the reporting period. EBITDA fell by €4.9 million, while EBT declined by €5.8 million compared with H1 2025.
The company said higher Bio-LNG marketing costs and the removal of double counting for advanced biofuels contributed to the decline. A significant portion of construction projects also remained unfinished at the June 30 reporting date, meaning some earnings recognition will move into later periods under German accounting rules.
The development highlights an important distinction for buyers and investors tracking the renewable gas market. Higher production and sales volumes do not necessarily translate into higher earnings when regulatory changes and distribution costs affect the economics of individual products.
Bio-LNG Costs Put Pressure on Current-Year Results
Bio-LNG remains an important part of EnviTec's renewable fuels business, but the company faced higher costs for bringing the product to market during the first half of 2026.
The retroactive removal of double counting for advanced biofuels also affected the economics of existing sales arrangements. EnviTec said these changes had a noticeable impact on its 2026 results, although the company continues to operate profitably.
At the same time, EnviTec reported higher production and sales volumes and increased revenue from greenhouse-gas quota activity. The company also said that price formation for longer-term delivery and quota contracts is developing more constructively following the removal of double counting.
For procurement teams, this illustrates how renewable fuel economics can depend on regulatory mechanisms as well as physical production costs. Changes to quota rules can directly affect contract structures, margins and demand.
16 MW EEG Award Strengthens Electricity Portfolio
One of the most important developments during H1 2026 was EnviTec's success in Germany's biomass auction conducted by the Federal Network Agency. The company received awards covering plants with approximately 16 MW of total electrical capacity.
The award gives part of EnviTec's electricity portfolio a new long-term basis. According to the company, the relevant installations will receive support for 12 years, providing greater visibility for part of its existing power-generation business.
The auction result also supports the company's wider strategic transition. EnviTec can maintain an established electricity-generation base while gradually expanding biomethane and Bio-LNG activities.
This combination creates a more diversified operating model. Existing plants can continue serving the electricity market where appropriate, while selected facilities can be upgraded or converted to generate higher-value renewable gas products.
€100 Million Investment Targets Biomethane and Bio-LNG
EnviTec plans to invest around €100 million through 2029 in new construction, plant modernization and conversion of additional facilities toward Bio-LNG.
The investment program provides a clear indication of where the company sees future growth within its own-operations business. Rather than simply expanding electricity generation, EnviTec is allocating capital toward technologies that can increase biomethane and renewable fuel production.
For suppliers, this could generate demand across multiple equipment categories:
Gas upgrading systems: Additional biomethane production requires technologies that separate methane from biogas and bring the gas to required quality specifications.
Compression equipment: Upgraded gas may require compression before injection, storage or further processing.
Bio-LNG infrastructure: Liquefaction and associated storage systems become relevant when biomethane is converted into renewable natural gas for transport applications.
Plant modernization: Existing biogas facilities may require upgrades to support new production routes.
Process equipment: New and converted facilities create demand for pumps, valves, instrumentation and related industrial components.
The investment cycle could therefore extend beyond EnviTec itself and into a wider network of technology and equipment suppliers.
Germany's Biomethane Market Could Expand
EnviTec sees further opportunities for biomethane in Germany, particularly in the heating market. The company said new building modernization legislation provides biomethane with a legally established role in the German heating sector.
The company is also calling for faster implementation of a green-gas quota and clearer, technology-neutral rules for gas-grid connections. These regulatory conditions will influence how quickly new biomethane production can reach customers.
EnviTec estimates that an initial additional biomethane demand of around 2.4 TWh could emerge in Germany and says the country's biogas industry has the capacity to supply this demand as the market develops.
For gas buyers, this could create a wider pool of renewable gas supply over time. For producers and infrastructure companies, however, the pace of market expansion will depend on regulatory implementation and connection capacity.
International Plant Construction Remains Important
The biomethane strategy is not the only growth area in EnviTec's business. The company's plant construction segment also recovered during the first half of 2026, with total output rising to €36.5 million from €18.4 million in H1 2025.
Plant construction revenue increased to €22.0 million from €14.8 million. The segment's EBT improved to negative €6.8 million from negative €11.7 million.
The order backlog stood at €143.1 million at June 30, 2026, with €112.1 million linked to international projects, particularly in Sweden and Spain.
This international activity gives equipment suppliers another channel into the renewable gas market. Demand for biogas plants, gas upgrading technology and related infrastructure can develop across different national markets even as regulatory conditions vary by country.
Procurement Opportunities Across the Renewable Gas Chain
EnviTec's investment program illustrates how the biomethane supply chain can create procurement opportunities beyond feedstock and gas itself.
Buyers and suppliers should monitor several categories as new plants and conversions move forward:
Gas purification and upgrading: Biomethane projects require reliable systems for producing gas that meets market or grid specifications.
Compression and grid injection: Connection infrastructure can determine how efficiently renewable gas reaches end users.
Liquefaction: Bio-LNG projects require specialized equipment capable of converting biomethane into a transportable liquid fuel.
Storage and handling: Renewable gas projects require suitable infrastructure for maintaining product quality and managing supply.
Plant maintenance: Expansion of operating assets increases demand for technical service, replacement parts and long-term maintenance contracts.
For chemical traders, the opportunity also extends to process chemicals and materials used in gas treatment, water management and plant operations.
EnviTec's Financial Position Supports the Investment Program
Despite the decline in H1 earnings, EnviTec entered the second half of 2026 with a solid financial position. The company's equity ratio reached 45.2% at June 30, up from 40.9% at the end of 2025, while liquid funds increased moderately to €26.8 million from €25.7 million.
The company maintained its full-year 2026 forecast for total output or revenue of €330 million to €370 million and EBT of €5 million to €15 million. It also continues to expect higher revenue and EBT in 2027.
This outlook places the planned biomethane investment within a broader multi-year strategy rather than treating the current earnings pressure as a standalone development.
What Buyers Should Watch in the Biomethane Market
EnviTec's H1 2026 performance highlights several factors that procurement teams should track as renewable gas markets develop.
Regulatory frameworks will remain a major demand driver. Changes to renewable fuel quotas, support mechanisms and gas-grid access can influence project economics and contract structures.
Bio-LNG marketing costs also deserve attention. The physical production of renewable gas is only one part of the value chain, with transportation, liquefaction, distribution and regulatory compliance affecting the final cost.
Plant conversion activity could create additional demand for equipment and engineering services. EnviTec's planned €100 million investment provides a specific example of how existing biogas assets can be adapted toward biomethane and Bio-LNG production.
Long-term supply contracts may become increasingly important as producers seek greater revenue visibility. EnviTec said it is already seeing more constructive price formation for long-term delivery and quota contracts following the removal of double counting.
Looking Ahead to Biomethane Growth
EnviTec's first-half 2026 results show a business growing its revenue while navigating higher Bio-LNG costs and regulatory changes. The company's response is increasingly centered on biomethane, supported by a 16 MW EEG award and a planned investment program of around €100 million through 2029.
The strategy could reshape the company's own-operations portfolio by combining long-term supported electricity generation with expanded biomethane and Bio-LNG production. At the same time, international plant construction and a €143.1 million order backlog provide additional activity across the broader biogas equipment market.
For chemical traders, equipment manufacturers and energy buyers, the development reinforces the importance of tracking renewable gas infrastructure as a growing industrial procurement segment. Gas upgrading, compression, liquefaction, plant modernization and related process technologies could all benefit as biomethane projects move from planning to execution.
