The EU's First Full-Scale CO₂ Storage Site Is Operating
Official Opening in Esbjerg
Denmark inaugurates CO2 storage facility in North Sea. Energy group INEOS announced on Friday September 18, 2026 that its Greensand carbon capture and storage project had begun storing carbon dioxide under the seabed beneath an old oil-platform in the North Sea. Today, Greensand brings the EU's first full-scale CO2 storage site and value chain into operation.
His Majesty King Frederik X of Denmark officially opened the first full-scale CO₂ storage site in the EU. The Greensand CO₂ storage facility is led by INEOS Energy, with partners Harbour Energy and the Danish North Sea Fund (Nordsøfonden).
What Greensand Actually Is
INEOS Energy-led Greensand has begun commercial operations at what the project partners describe as the EU's first full-scale facility for permanent carbon dioxide storage. The gas will be shipped on Carbon Destroyer 1, described by the project partners as the EU's first purpose-built CO2 carrier, before being injected into the Nini West reservoir.
On September 18, 2026, the Greensand Future project was officially inaugurated in Esbjerg, launching what its partners describe as Europe's first commercial-scale, fully integrated value chain for capturing, transporting and permanently storing CO₂. The project uses a depleted oil field known as the Nini West field as its underground storage site.
Capacity Today and Scale Tomorrow
The facility will initially capture and store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, with potential to scale to 4–8 million tonnes at full capacity. The first commercial phase targets storing about 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year with partners saying the project can be expanded toward multi-million tonnes annually at full build-out.
The CO2 will initially be sourced mainly from Danish biomethane plants. That biogenic origin makes the storage count as negative emissions in EU accounting, a key selling point for early customers.

A Decade From Pilot to Commercial Value Chain
Greensand Future builds on the successful Project Greensand pilot which, in March 2023, demonstrated for the first time the feasibility of cross-border, offshore CO2 storage across the full value chain from capture to transport and storage.
With the aim of initiating storage operations into the INEOS-operated Nini field in the Danish North Sea at the end of 2025 / early 2026, Greensand Future will become the EU's first operational CO2 storage facility intended to mitigate climate change. The FID paves the way for expected investments of more than $150 million across the Greensand CCS value chain to scale storage capacity.
INEOS announced that Project Greensand has commenced operations, making it the first full-scale CO₂ storage facility to go live within the European Union. The milestone marks the culmination of nearly a decade of technical and regulatory work to build a complete, commercial-scale carbon capture and storage value chain inside EU borders.
Why Denmark and Why Now
Denmark's regulatory framework and depleted North Sea fields give it a first-mover advantage. Unlike Norway's Northern Lights which is outside the EU, Greensand is inside EU jurisdiction, allowing EU ETS credits, EU funding and EU liability frameworks to be tested domestically.
The timing aligns with Brussels reviewing industrial decarbonization tools. The same month Brussels reviewed battery recycling targets and left them unchanged to push for more EU treatment capacity, and the EU SAF supply beat the 2025 ReFuelEU mandate with 2.79% supply. CO2 storage is the third pillar of that circularity push.
Lessons for Chemicals and Heavy Industry
For chemical majors warning about Europe's competitiveness, a domestic CO2 storage option changes the economics of abatement. BASF has said the chemical industry is experiencing its most difficult period in 25 years due to energy and CO2 costs, while Evonik cuts 3,200 jobs by 2029. Access to commercial storage at Esbjerg allows German and Danish emitters to avoid surrendering EU allowances and to produce low-carbon products like blue ammonia or eSAF precursors.
The model mirrors Wanhua's Taozi Bay closed-loop water system winning the Zhan Tianyou Award for industrial circularity. Europe's first full-scale CO2 storage site does for carbon what Taozi Bay does for water: close the loop commercially.
What Comes Next
Europe's first full-scale CO₂ storage facility opens in Denmark, but scale-up depends on shipping. Carbon Destroyer 1 proves the EU has its first purpose-built CO2 carrier, yet a fleet is needed to link emitters in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands to Danish and Norwegian reservoirs. Expect more storage licenses in the Danish North Sea and competition from Northern Lights for German industrial CO2.
