ADNOC Expands Its LNG Partnership With Thailand
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has signed a multi-year sales and purchase agreement with Thailand’s Gulf Group to supply approximately 2 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG), with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027.
Announced on October 5, 2026, the agreement builds on the companies’ first LNG supply arrangement, signed in 2025. Under the new deal, ADNOC Trading will deliver the fuel to Gulf Group, a major Thai energy and infrastructure business, further strengthening ADNOC’s commercial presence in Asian gas markets.
The agreement supports ADNOC’s strategy to expand its LNG marketing and trading business while helping Gulf Group diversify its LNG portfolio. The companies have not publicly disclosed the contract’s full duration, pricing terms or the precise origin of the cargoes.
Why the Agreement Matters for Thailand
Thailand relies heavily on natural gas for electricity generation, making dependable fuel supplies important for its power system and wider economy. LNG imports help supplement domestic gas production and give buyers access to international suppliers.
Securing additional supply arrangements can provide greater flexibility when demand changes or existing supply routes face disruption. Thailand’s buyers also need to manage price volatility, shipping availability and competition for LNG cargoes across Asia.
The agreement with ADNOC gives Gulf Group another supply relationship within its broader procurement strategy. However, the deal alone does not eliminate Thailand’s exposure to international gas prices or potential shipping disruptions.
Gulf Group Strengthens Its LNG Portfolio
For Gulf Group, the agreement is part of a wider effort to develop a diversified LNG portfolio supported by trading capabilities, infrastructure and shipping arrangements.
The company has been expanding its position across the energy value chain. Stronger supplier relationships can help it manage procurement options and serve its power-generation and industrial gas businesses.
The new contract also extends a commercial relationship established in 2025. By securing additional LNG from ADNOC, Gulf Group can broaden its supplier base and improve the range of commercial options available to its trading operations.
The effectiveness of that strategy will depend on factors such as the contract’s delivery schedule, market conditions and the group’s ability to coordinate LNG purchases with its downstream requirements.
ADNOC Builds Its Global LNG Trading Business
ADNOC is using its LNG marketing and trading platform to expand access to international customers and manage a growing portfolio of gas supplies.
The company launched its global LNG marketing and trading platform in Abu Dhabi Global Market in July 2026. The platform brings its LNG marketing and trading capabilities together, with the aim of improving portfolio management, delivery flexibility and shipping options.
ADNOC has stated that it is targeting 47 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of marketable LNG beyond 2030. This is a future target rather than current production or contracted delivery volume.
The Thailand agreement demonstrates how ADNOC can grow its international trading activity through multi-year customer contracts. Such agreements can help connect its supply portfolio with demand centres across Asia and other major markets.
Asia’s LNG Market and Energy Security
Asian economies remain important buyers in the global LNG market. Electricity demand, industrial activity and the need to balance domestic gas production with imports all influence regional purchasing decisions.
Long-term and multi-year agreements can offer buyers more supply visibility, while traders benefit from stronger commercial relationships and opportunities to optimize cargoes. Nevertheless, contract structures vary, and the actual degree of price certainty depends on the terms agreed between the parties.
For Thailand, the ADNOC deal adds another source of LNG within a market exposed to changing international prices and logistics. For ADNOC, it reinforces its ambition to become a larger participant in global LNG marketing and trading.
What Happens Next?
Deliveries under the agreement are scheduled to start in 2027 and continue over a multi-year period. The companies have not announced the precise contract duration or detailed delivery timetable.
Market observers will be watching how the agreement fits into Gulf Group’s overall LNG procurement strategy and how ADNOC develops its customer base as its trading platform expands.
The deal is not a new LNG production project in Thailand. Instead, it is a commercial supply agreement intended to connect ADNOC’s LNG trading portfolio with Thai demand. Its longer-term significance will depend on the volumes delivered, the flexibility of the arrangement and the changing needs of Thailand’s energy sector.
