Eighty five million tons. That is the estimated combined capacity of the newly merged Again and Genomatica to divert carbon dioxide annually, a figure that puts the deal in rare company among carbon utilization platforms. For chemical buyers trying to size up how serious this consolidation really is, that number offers a useful, if imperfect, benchmark.
The figure deserves some unpacking before anyone treats it as a settled fact about current output.
The estimate reflects two very different mechanisms working on opposite ends of the carbon problem. Genomatica's contribution comes from indirect emission avoidance, meaning the potential for its fermentation technology to displace fossil-based chemical production at industrial scale.
Again's contribution works differently. Its plants directly capture CO2 and convert it into acetate and acetic acid on site, avoiding the petrochemical route that would otherwise produce those chemicals.

Again's own operating numbers are considerably smaller than the headline figure, which is expected for a five-year-old company. Its pilot plant in Copenhagen captures roughly 1 ton of CO2 per day, and its Texas facility scaled that model up using CO2 sourced from a neighboring Dow operation.
A separate demonstration project with Arkema, Johnson Matthey and DSM-Firmenich in Norway is targeted at converting about 9,100 tons of CO2 per year into 4,000 tons of acetone. These are meaningful pilot and early commercial numbers, but they sit well below the tens of millions of tons implied by the combined estimate.
Acetate chemicals produced through this route already have a marketing outlet. Helm has held a 10-year agreement since 2024 to distribute Again's commodity chemicals, including acetic acid and esters.
For procurement teams evaluating bio-based chemical suppliers, the 85 million ton figure is best read as a signal of ambition and technical reach, not an order book.

The headline number is real and worth noting, but it describes potential more than present output. Genomatica's decades of licensing reach combined with Again's direct capture model creates a platform with genuine long-term scale, even if today's actual tonnage remains far smaller.
